Star Wars Technical Worldbuilding Notes 4

The Malevolence's ion web thing is a mystery in terms of what it was actually supposed to do. That ship didn't accomplish anything any other warship its size couldn't. If anything, it's a waste of energy because of how much of the web just travels past a target that's hit.

All I've really been able to come up with for how that weapon might be uniquely useful is against planetary shields. It'd have to be attached to a much bigger ship, but theoretically if you put enough power into that, you could take down the shielding across an entire hemisphere in a single shot. Still a very energy-intensive novelty weapon at best - the standard doctrine of a concentrated barrage to form a local breach and landing ground forces through the breach exists for a reason - but I can see it coming in handy against a layout of ground defenses that planned on an attacking fleet being able to breach the shield at only a few specific points.

Headcanonically, conventionally armed Subjugator-class variants did end up as the main CIS line cruiser for the rest of that war, because it's also just a better design for a warship. I admittedly have yet to do proper volume calcs for either of them, but no matter how many reactors and cannons and military-grade power conduits you can fit in a Lucrehulk, the firing arcs are still abysmal in comparison.

Fortifications on planets can inherently be much higher-powered than ships, because there's much more space for reactors and neutrino radiator banks and shield generators. The limit on the fuel capacity of ships is the mass of hypermatter, which is also of no concern to a planet.

Ecumenopolis worlds would be the hardest to take, and would probably require specialized tactics, because the amount of territory you have to cover is a matter of volume and not just surface area.

Shields should be present on all planets with access to galactic standard technology. Not necessarily shields that can stand up to a turbolaser bombardment, but they need to at least stop asteroids.

The relative prominence of Mon Calamari compared to Kuat in New Republic and then Galactic Alliance warship construction is something I wonder about sometimes.

Kuat, of course, has their giant fucking system ring and stuff, and is historically the dominant starship manufacturer. But I wonder if the political prominence of Mon Calamari due to their contributions from the Rebellion onward might lead to them getting more new contracts.

Come to think of it, I like the thought of whatever corporate entity probably handles the Mon Cal yards having subsidiary facilities specifically on other ocean planets.

Or maybe the Mon Cal yards are just completely nationalized. I can kinda see the Galactic Alliance, at least, wanting at least one major shipyard to be under their direct control, to limit potential interference from corrupt corporate executives. I don't think I've ever heard anything explicitly contradicting that.

Anything you might hear about pre-Endor Mon Cal designs, which are converted civilian stuff, being superior to their purpose-built Imperial warship counterparts is pure bullshit, for, I'd think, obvious reasons.

Realistically, I do think the New Republic would have started to show original purpose-built warship designs earlier than we see, and as I've talked about before, that's the niche that I headcanonically have brought in the Starhawk for (minus the super-tractor-beam thing, because I think it's dumb as shit). I've also thought of moving the introduction of the MC90 design generation a couple years earlier, like maybe 8 ABY, for similar reasons.

I think the Starhawk Mark II only exists in disney canon because of the stats in Armada, but I can maybe extrapolate it in here as a successor that the NR came up for the sake of quickly coming up with something to pay KDY for after they took the planet, to keep the company happy.

U-Wings also exist in my headcanon because I just like them, and a random piece of worldbuilding I've devised about it is that they're technically organized as NR/GA Marine Corps assets.

The way I understand it, the general basis for the NR and GA naval structure - four to nine numbered fleets at any given time, and most major engagements involve at least one of those being committed in full - comes from stuff set up in Black Fleet Crisis, where the new Fifth Fleet is the centerpiece of the plot and stuff. Some of the reference books elaborated on that in earlier periods, laying out some of the movements and positions of the First through Fourth in the first two years or so after Endor - but it's not as widespread as a point of reference in most of the New Republic-era books. I'd be pretty curious to learn what fleet Han's anti-Zsinj task force was drawn from, for example.

hiii! i don’t live in berlin so my experience might be a little different from how it’s portrayed in druck because each state in germany has different school systems, but i think the general things are the same everywhere lol

nora and the others are in year 11. with that year you start the “Oberstufe”, these are the last 2-3 years of school where you prepare for your Abitur, i.e. your graduation in year 12/13. students are usually 16-17 years old then. with the start of the Oberstufe you also have to start making plans for your abiball, abi gag, year book, abi hoodies, music, event halls, catering, all that stuff. and the most important thing here is how you’ll pay for it all. schools don’t give you any financial support for your Abitur, the students have to pay for everything by themselves. so it’s smart to start as early as you can with organising it because with school work becoming more and more as the Oberstufe progresses you don’t want to do it last minute.

therefore it’s not unrealistic that nora’s class is already discussing about things like the abiball in their first year of the Oberstufe when they still have 2 years to go. in my case (i live in the only federal state who has 13 years of school instead of only 12) we had 3 years time to plan everything and we definitely needed all that time. you have to keep in mind that schools also generally don’t let students use their auditorium or sports hall for the abiball, they have to find a venue themselves and with numerous schools having their Abi at the same time it can get quite hard to find a good one that’s still affordable.

as i said in the previous ask, when i had my abi we financed it mostly through sponsors (sooo many sponsors that we had to accumulate over all these years), bakesales, sport events and a few abi parties. but at the end everyone still had to pay 100 € plus pay for the tickets for the abiball, which were like 25€ per ticket. so it’s reallyyyy expensive if you don’t do it right and be smart about how you’ll finance everything from the beginning

“I’ve always drank it, my whole family does,” you responded, your gaze lifting to meet his. He leaned back, eyes drinking you in. You chewed your lip, pressing your thighs together in an effort to quench the ache that had begun to form.

“Tommy!” A voice rang from across the room. The brother, who you assumed now was named Tommy, stood. “Excuse me for a minute,” Tommy said, stepping aside to converse with a woman you recognized as Ada’s aunt. The woman seemed angry, but then, from what you remembered, she always had. After a few minutes, she left and Tommy slid back into the booth, exhaling and shooting his whiskey. Ada and the youngest brother, who you had learned was John had both moseyed off, so it was just you and Tommy in the booth, in the corner of the room. Tommy took a drag of his cigarette and sighed.

“Ada told me you need a job,” he said, eyes lingering on you.

“I do,” you admitted, “but I don’t want you to feel obliged or anything. I can manage-”

“I need a new assistant,” Tommy cut you off, but you honestly didn’t mind. Something about the way he did it managed not to rub you the wrong way. “It’s mostly paperwork, but I’d pay you well. 40 shillings a week.” Tommy took the last drag of his cigarette, putting it out while still holding you in his gaze.

“I can do that,” you managed to blurt out. God knows what you were getting yourself into, getting hired by a man that not only had a notorious reputation but was making you trip over your own words. Something about the way he looked at you, though, made you say yes. You already couldn’t resist him. God damn it, you thought to yourself.

Across from you, Tommy pulled his jacket on. “Monday, 8 am. My office.” He slipped a piece of paper to you with an address scrawled on it, standing and leaving. As quickly as you had become intoxicated by him, he had left. The whole night, throughout all of Ada’s chatter, on the way home, in the bath, in bed, he never left the back of your mind. You wanted to be his, as much as you tried to fight the thought for not only your sake but Ada’s. You knew it was impossible, that he would want you like this, so you reserved yourself to daydreaming. His hands on your hips, his mouth on yours: you craved it, unsatisfied by your own touch even after multiple rounds. You couldn’t escape him.

Grieving family slam ‘crazy’ new Spanish quarantine rule as they try to bring home body of father

A grieving  family has blasted the Government’s hastily-ordered new quarantine rules which throws their plans to repatriate the body of a loved one and organise his funeral into turmoil.

The ‘crazy’ regulations have a devastating impact on the Mortiboys, who returned from Spain today after travelling there to bid an agonising farewell to a family member while switching off his life support machine.

James Mortiboys, 44, tragically died during a recent holiday in Barcelona with friends.

His bereaved brother company director Anthony Mortiboys, returning to Birmingham Airport with his wife, niece and parents, said: ‘The new restrictions are crazy and very annoying. They will adversely effect many people and will cause a lot of extra grief for our family.

‘I have just lost my big brother. We’ve got a funeral to arrange and a body to bring home and we’re not sure how we’re meant to do it if we’re all in quarantine for two weeks.

‘It’s a nightmare and there’s been no help or support whatsoever from the authorities.’

Anthony, 41, from Nuneaton, Warwickshire, told MailOnline how his older sibling was left battling for life after nearly drowning in the sea.

He explained: ‘My brother was fit and healthy but suddenly had a seizure while he was swimming. He drowned but was was put on a life support.

‘The family went out last week to see him in hospital and had to make the heartbreaking decision to switch off his life support.’

The body of carer James has been due to brought home later this week by his dad and brother.

His father David said: ‘We has been due to go back to Barcelona to bring my son home but now we have to quarantine and how can we organise the funeral properly? We can’t. It is all such a mess.’

His tearful wife Christine was too upset to speak.

Anthony, also accompanied by James‘ daughter 15-year-old Abi, added: ‘But it is what it is and it has to be done. We just weren’t expecting to have to go into a fortnight’s quarantine on our return home.

‘We only found out last night after paying respects to my brother. It’s a very difficult time. It’s not that it will effect my job.

‘I’m a company director of a construction firm and I have staff who can still work but really it’s all about my brother now.’

Wife April, 33, a self employed cleaner, told how the family had frantically tried to get new flights to fly home last night before the Government’s new rule kicked in.

She said: ‘We were looking at new flights but there was nothing suitable and they had all gone up in price from £40 to £300 which is ridiculous.

‘We had been due to fly home this morning so we did along with 100 other passengers on our flight.

‘None of us have any Covid symptoms but we’ve all got our home testing kits and we’ll now have to stay in quarantine which means I won’t be able to work and will lose money.’

The woman, 30 (no name or pix) added: ‘I’ve had a week in Spain and felt safer over there than here.Everyone’s wearing face masks there and if you’re caught without one there’s a 20 euro fine. 

‘I’m happy to go into quarantine. It’s only a few weeks and doesn’t really effect me.’

Dominic Raab refused to apologise for reimposing quarantine on travel to Spain today despite the fury of British holidaymakers who have already headed to the Costas.

The Foreign Secretary defended the decision by the Department for Transport to remove the country from a list of safe destinations in the wake of a spike in coronavirus cases.

The decision has left holidaymakers already in Spain or those preparing to fly out ‘panicking’ about a fortnight-long home quarantine when they return to the UK – which could leave some unable to work.

One holidaymaker described the decision as ‘ridiculous’, while another, an NHS project worker, claims his work will be delayed as a result of him having to self-isolate.

And commerce chiefs say the ‘abrupt’ changes will also cause disruption for owners of companies, who will face losing staff for a fortnight with very little warning.

Travel industry chiefs say they understand the government’s decision, with Spain seeing a recent spike in coronavirus cases, but called for a re-think over quarantines for travellers from the Canary and Balaeric islands – where case numbers are much lower than the mainland.

Meanwhile Spain’s Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya has today hit back and declared Spain ‘safe for tourists’ and refused to comment on whether the country will retaliate with similar measures on incoming British holidaymakers.

Today Mr Raab said the decision to remove the quarantine-free travel with Spain had been taken yesterday based on data received and analysed on Friday.

Labour blasted the decision, which came into effect at midnight, as ‘shambolic’ after it emerged that even Transport Secretary Grant Shapps and business minister Paul Scully had been caught out by the speed of the move while on Spanish holidays.  

But Mr Raab told Sky’s Ridge on Sunday: ‘The cases in Spain, the data came we got was on the Friday, showed a big jump right across mainland Spain, that was then assessed yesterday afternoon and we took the decision as swiftly as we could.

‘And we can’t make apologies for doing so. We must be able to take swift, decisive action, particularly in relation to localised, or internationally in relation to Spain or a particular country, where we see we must take action.

‘Otherwise, we risk re-infection into the UK, potentially a second wave here and then another lockdown.

Mr Raaab told Sky’s Ridge on Sunday: ‘We cannot apologise for doing so. We must be able to take swift, decisive action’

He told Ridge: ‘I understand why they have made the decision. But the way the decision has been made in the last 24 hours is frankly shambolic.

‘There are holidaymakers in Spain at the moment confused and distressed, there are people about to go on holiday to Spain and the islands like Tenerife who are confused. They don’t know if their employers will allow them to take two weeks’ quarantine.

‘The Government just saying that ‘we hope employers co-operate’, well I hope I will win the lottery on Saturday, it doesn’t mean it will happen.’

BIOGRAPHY

For a witch, Abigail had an average, non-magical upbringing… likely because neither of her parents were witches. There was, of course, a great deal of shock and confusion when they came to find that she was inexplicably aging slower than all of the other kids in her class and could make a pot of water boil faster just by sheer will, but there wasn’t any kind of ill-will towards her or her sibling for it. In fact, her parents handled it very well, always ensuring that she felt loved and protected and trying to find the training she might need to harness her seemingly uncontrollable magical inclinations.

When she was ten, her parents divorced. Their separation wasn’t rooted in anything malicious, but rather a result of her dad being married to his career and her mother being tired of it. The reason didn’t really matter. An already emotional child, this sent Abigail into a state of turmoil, devastated by the breakup of her perfect familial unit and the sudden restriction that she could only see her father on the weekends. When her dad remarried and had another kid, though, she was set on an entirely new path–jealous, petty, destructive, and just an overall handful. Although her father had tried to maintain a connection at first, over time, his new family took precedent; whether that was a result of Abigail’s emotional responses or his own natural shift of priorities, she’ll never know. But weekend visits became rare, and Abigail got tired, and eventually she just became jaded and bitter about the whole thing.

Her tumultuous teenage years did bring about something positive, though–her sponsorship by Norma. Sure, Norma wasn’t known for choosing the most stable of witches, and it could have easily been seen as an affront, but for as little as she knew about the magical community, Abigail knew that this meant she was special. When she learned about Polaris at 23, there was no question in her mind that this is where she wanted to be. Although powerful, she quickly discovered that, as a water element, she was unstable; the more frustrated she got, the less control she had. And while Abigail actively did try and control herself, she found she preferred magic that she could control, such as herbalism and potions. In both respects, she was a natural, though rather average in every other discipline.

It was at Polaris where she met Daniel, and over the course of their schooling, they fell in love. They left the school shortly after their engagement, both feeling as though they were ready to start their lives. They got married, settled down, and while their marriage was good, they struggled with trying to conceive. For years, they tried doctors, potions, herbs–anything they could get their hands on. They weren’t really interested in leading any grandiose lives, but rather one full of love and comfort. As Abigail became more emotional about not being able to have kids, it put a larger strain on their marriage, which just led to her being more desperate to conceive, which put them in more debt, which caused more problems, and, well–they were in love, but toward the end, things were rocky. Abigail was devastated when Daniel passed away young as a result of a freak accident, and true to her history of not being able to control her emotions, Abigail spiraled.

A year after his death, Abigail was alone, a wreck, and broke. That’s when The Tether was able to convince her to come back to Polaris, to give her a place to live, a fresh start, and something to drag her back out of her mind. With no hope of being able to control her emotions, Abi threw herself back into Potions & Herbalism to keep herself calm. She still needed to pay for Polaris and her debt, so she began to grow special herbs and brew more complex, illegal potions to sell to a group of her trusted friends. This has since grown, and Abigail’s sense of self worth is now rooted in this little risky business she has for herself–she’s not sure if she’d get kicked out of Polaris if anything ever came to light, but it’s a risk.

To know Abigail is… not a bad experience, really. It’s not as though she breaks down every hour of the day. In fact, she can be good company–she’s quick-witted and her humor is dry, and she’s not necessarily drowning everyone around her in negativity. But to be loved by her? That’s more complex. She’s been abandoned before in many different respects, so she’s easily jealous and possessive of those who are in her inner circle. She also has a habit of putting herself in risky situations (she has a striking lack of self preservation), so she needs some protecting from herself as well, which is a burden that’s put on her loved ones. She’d go to bat for all of them, is even a pleasure to be around, but she demands a lot of emotional energy, to say the least

INCLINATION

Norma is a water elemental who is drawn to the moon. Norma is volatile, prone to jealousy, and their abilities can turn from boiling water to freezing snow in a split second. Norma selects those who have a tether, or someone who keeps them grounded in their emotions, so that they can stay stable. Typically, Norma is powerful, but not very reliable.

Regardless of the exact nature of it, these two have a co-dependent, somewhat unhealthy relationship. He’s her business partner in crime, her best friend, and the only other person in the world who is dealing with the same thing she is, yet a constant reminder of what they’ve both lost–a bad tether to have in the long run, but Abigail will take what she can get.

Half-Sibling: (Must be 9+ years younger than Abi.) This was a person that Abigail struggled with a lot growing up; when her dad remarried and had another kid, Abi was extremely jealous and likely acted out a lot as a result. Therefore, these two did not have the greatest relationship growing up. Maybe they’re doing okay now, or maybe there’s still a lot of tension, but regardless, they have a mixed past.

Clients: She’s selling drugs and brewing complicated potions for cash–she has a loyal clientele. Maybe they want something to help them unwind after a long day, or maybe they commission her for something with a little bit more of a kick. Frankly, Abigail doesn’t care as long as they keep quiet and pay her on time.

Rival: Pretty simple. Someone who is, at least to some degree, in the business of selling to Polaris & The Village. Abigail is stepping on their toes in a big way, and it could get ugly.

Best Friend: Aside from The Tether, this is one person who can put up with Abigail’s emotional, unstable demeanor–and, in return, Abi tries to keep her shit together for them. This person helps keep her calm and, for that, she loves them deeply.
